Overseerr FAQ

Overseerr is a powerful tool designed to act as a “middleman” for your media server. It gives you (and any friends or family you share your server with) a clean, Netflix-style interface to discover new content and request it without needing access to your backend server settings.

🔑 How to Login with Plex

Logging into Overseerr is designed to be seamless because it uses your existing Plex account for authentication.

  1. Navigate to your Overseerr URL: This is usually something like http://[your-ip-address]:5055 (unless you have set up a custom domain or reverse proxy). ***I will provide you this link.
  2. Select “Sign In with Plex”: You will see a large yellow/orange button.
  3. Authenticate: A Plex popup window will appear.
    • If you are already logged into Plex in your browser, it may simply ask you to “Continue as [Your Name].”
    • If not, enter your Plex email and password (or use Google/Apple/Facebook login if that’s how your Plex account is set up).
  4. First-Time Setup: If you are the admin and this is your first time logging in, you will be prompted to link your Plex server and your downloaders (Radarr for movies, Sonarr for TV).

🎬 How to Search and Request

The interface is very intuitive and works similarly on both desktop and mobile.

Searching

  • Search Bar: Use the search bar at the top of the screen to type in the name of a movie, TV show, or even an actor.
  • Discover Tab: Browse categories like “Trending,” “Popular,” “Upcoming,” or “Studios” to find something new.

Requesting

  1. Click the Title: Once you find something you want, click on the poster to open the details page.
  2. Check Availability: Overseerr will show if the item is already “Available” (on Plex), “Processing” (currently downloading), or “Requested.”
  3. Click “Request”: If it’s not available, click the blue Request button.
  4. Select Options (If enabled):
    • Movies: You may be able to select a specific quality profile (e.g., 1080p vs 4K).
    • TV Shows: You can choose to request the “Entire Series” or “Select Seasons.”
  5. Submit: Click Request again to confirm.

Note: Depending on the server’s settings, your request might be “Pending” (waiting for the admin to approve) or “Approved” (automatically sent to be downloaded).

💡 What Overseerr Does (The “How it Works”)

Think of Overseerr as the “Manager” of your media ecosystem:

  • Discovery: It shows you what’s trending and allows you to browse actors’ filmographies.
  • Automation: Once a request is approved, Overseerr talks to Radarr (Movies) or Sonarr (TV). Those apps find the files, send them to your downloader (like qBittorrent or Sabnzbd), and once finished, they move the files into your Plex folders.
  • User Management: You can invite your friends to Overseerr using their Plex accounts. You can give them “Request Limits” (e.g., only 2 movies a week) or set it so their requests require your manual approval.
  • Notifications: It can send you alerts via Discord, Telegram, or Email when a request is made or when a movie is finally “Available” to watch.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: I requested a movie, but it’s not in Plex yet. Why?

A: Overseerr only requests the item. Your server still has to find a healthy download and finish downloading it. You can check the “Request” status in Overseerr to see if it is “Processing.”

Q: Can I use Overseerr as a mobile app?

A: There isn’t an official app in the App Store, but Overseerr is a PWA (Progressive Web App). Open the URL in your mobile browser (Safari/Chrome), tap the “Share” or “Menu” button, and select “Add to Home Screen” for an app-like experience.

Q: Does it cost money?

A: No, Overseerr is free and open-source.

Q: Can I request things for my friends?

A: Yes! As an admin, you can click the “Request” button on any title and choose “Request on behalf of…” to select one of your users.

Q: Why doesn’t the login button work?

A: This is usually due to a popup blocker or a “Cross-Site Tracking” setting in your browser. Ensure popups are allowed for your Overseerr URL.
